We have a farmer in our church who shares the name of Daugherty with a couple of outlaws listed on the outlaw page for Oklahoma. Just talked to Verle, and he said it is absolutely true that he has outlaws in his geneology. His grandmother told him the following story!
It seems one of his ancestors decided to steal a couple of chickens from this farmer because he was hungry. He grabbed a couple of chickens and started to sneak off, but, ... the owner and his son were waiting for him with guns drawn. A shoot out insued.
Outlaw Daugherty shot his way out of the gun battle and retained the chickens. Verle said, "My grandmother didn't tell me if he killed either of the two farmers. But, ... this is a true story, and if you go to the Oklahoma Outlaws homepage, you can find Daughertys listed.
